Disabled girl's body found in field; suspect in custody | 911
The developmentally-disabled girl who disappeared last week has been found dead.
Det. Ed Troyer said Kimmie Daily's body was found in a ditch about 12 blocks from her home, and an unidentified 18-year-old suspect has been taken into custody for investigation of homicide.
Investigators said the suspect led them to the girl's body in the 11400 block of 122nd St. E.
"Our detectives have been working this case, doing canvassing throughout the week. He was an initial contact during the initial canvassing, and we went back to him based on some discrepancies he'd given us," said Sgt. Mike Blair.
"He agreed to sit down and talk to our detectives today, and eventually tonight he decided to lead our detectives over here to the outdoor crime scene."
It is not known whether the victim knew the suspect.
"From what I gather, he was a neighborhood face; I wouldn't even say an acquaintance. He's just someone who's in the area," said Blair.
The victim's father, Cecil Daily, said he began worrying on Tuesday when his daughter left for a friend's house on her bike. She never made it there, and wasn't seen again until her body was found on Monday evening.
Kimmie, 16, functioned at the level of a 9-year-old girl due to a disability since birth.
Search crews spent the end of the week looking for Kimmie Daily from the air and on the ground, using tracking dogs and helicopters. They even tried to pinpoint a signal from her cell phone, but it could not be located.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine how Kimmie died.
Blair said detectives and search and rescue crews will spend Tuesday searching the area where Kimmie's body was found.
"We're going to be searching for evidence in the crime scene itself," he said. "We're also searching for the phone that's still missing."
