Rose Cowan tells weight loss story today on Dr. Oz @ 3 p.m.
Health, People

Three years ago, Puyallup's Rose Cowan couldn't have imagined the moment that will play out on national television today.

She is with Dr. Oz, on the second day of his brand new show on KOMO 4 at 3 p.m.

Three years ago, Rose weighed 310 pounds and was about to have a stroke.

"At that moment was when I said, 'I'm dying. I'm dying.'"

Her blood pressure was so high, her doctor said she could have a stroke at any moment.

"This isn't fair. I'm allowing food to kill me. I swear to you this is what happened," she says. "I have seven kids and food is going to kill me."

Rose had just adopted her youngest son, her seventh child. She didn't want to leave her kids without a mother.

So she stuck a white board on her refrigerator.

"I wrote, 'I love my children more than food.' So that was my first big thing. Second thing I did was I bought a pedometer, which is like the best thing anyone can buy for themselves because it's so motivating."

Then she started walking.

Rose started with walking a few blocks, working her way up to 10 miles a day.

Some of her inspiration came from seeing Dr. Oz on television, explaining what too much fat does to internal organs.

And now, she's met the man who helped save her life.

"You know what, he was real. I think that is the biggest thing I would say for Dr. Oz. You see on TV how excited he is about meeting people, it really is real."

Rose dropped the weight of an entire person -- 150 pounds.

She had surgery to remove excess skin.

"I actually am a participant in my own life and the lives of my kids, where before I was a bystander. Now I'm living for the first time in 20 years."

And she wants to help others do the same thing. She has a Facebook page and an e-mail address, mycyber6@msn.com that she wants people to use to contact her.

"I want to be able to contact those people and say, 'you know what, you can do it. I'm not special. I'm not unique. I'm just like every other obese person. You can do this.'"
